World Poetry Day & World Down Syndrome Day

An evening of literary expression and social awareness unfolded at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bhubaneswar, as poetry and inclusivity came together to mark World Poetry Day and World Down Syndrome Day. Organised by Ketaki Foundation Trust in collaboration with Swabhiman, the event brought together poets, parents, and members of the community to celebrate the power of words while highlighting the importance of inclusion.
The gathering began with an introduction to the significance of the dual observance by Jyotiranjan Swain. The programme was then conducted by Pabitra Mohan Kar, who guided the proceedings seamlessly, creating a thoughtful and engaging flow throughout the evening.
A key highlight of the event was the participation of children with Down Syndrome along with their parents, whose presence added warmth and a deep sense of connection to the programme. The evening also created space for reflection on inclusivity, community, and the importance of embracing diversity in society.
The event was graced by Chief Guest Dr. Sruti Mohapatra, noted social activist and Founder, Swabhiman, who spoke about the need for greater awareness, acceptance, and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
A captivating poetry reading session featured eminent poets including Manua Das, Bharat Majhi, Biyotprajna Tripathy, Bharadwaj Mishra, Satya Ranjan Praharaj, Rasmita Behera, and Pabitra Mohan Kar. Their recitations reflected themes of humanity, empathy, and shared experiences, resonating deeply with the audience.
The programme concluded with insightful remarks by Dr. Rabindra K Swain, who reflected on the significance of such initiatives in fostering a more inclusive and compassionate society. This was followed by the felicitation of guest poets with mementos and stoles. Kapilash Bhuyan delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and attendees.
Sri Pabitra Mohan Kar gently connected every part of the programme, guiding the evening of poetry and inclusion with warmth and ease.
Eminent poetess, storyteller and novelist Biyotprajna Tripathy recited a poem from her college days, and with her wit and playful conversation, gently lightened the mood of the evening.
Poet Bharadwaj Mishra presented an English poem rich in thought and emotion, bringing a moment of introspection to the flow of the evening.
Veteran poet Manua Das recited two poignant poems centred on a young girl’s experience, striking a deeply emotional chord and echoing the essence of the day and he was presented with a memento with an Utariya by Rabindra Kumar Swain.
Poet Bharat Majhi was presented with a memento by Jyoti Ranjan Swain, Managing Trustee of Ketaki Foundation Trust, as a token of appreciation.
Poet and Convenor Sri Pabitra Mohan Kar was felicitated by Chief Guest Dr. Sruti Mohapatra, in the presence of Jyotiranjan Swain of Ketaki Foundation Trust.
Young poet Rasmita Behera captivated the audience with her short and powerful poems.
Poet Satya Ranjan Praharaj was also presented with a memento by well-known historian and writer Abhiram Biswal making the moment especially meaningful.
Bharati Parida shared her experience as a mother of a child with Down Syndrome, and also recited a poem, adding a deeply personal and moving voice to the evening.
Subhangini Sahoo, a parent, shared her journey with her daughter with Down Syndrome with warmth and quiet strength, and later shared the stage with her as she performed graceful Odissi moves, a moment filled with pride and quiet joy.
Dr. Rabindra K. Swain concluded the programme with thoughtful reflections on inclusion, community, and the role of such initiatives in shaping a more compassionate society.
