EDITORIAL NOTE
Jayanta Mahapatra started publishing Chandrabhāgā in 1979 and continued it until his passing in 2023. The journal is now revived as a tribute to the poet, translator, essayist and editor that Jayanta Mahapatra was. Apart from poetry, the journal will also publish fiction and non-fiction, criticism and cultural studies, along with review-essays of the books of poems published in recent years.

Ronald Tuhin D’Rozario lives and writes in Kolkata. These two poems of Soubhagyakumar Misra are drawn from his collection, Dva Suparna published this year by Ketaki Books, Bhubaneswar. He was the recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1986. Robin S Ngangom received this year’s Jayanta Mahapatra National Award for Literature. Bilal Moin is the editor of The Penguin Book of Poems on the Indian City. Faturananda is the author of, among others, Mo Phuta Dangara Kahani. Leelawati Mohapatra, Paul St-Pierre and K K Mohapatra have been consistently translating Odia novels and short stories into English for the last forty years. One of their recent works of translation is Maguni’s Bullock Cart and Other Classic Odia Stories, published by HarperCollins India. Rajendra Kishore Panda (1944 – 2025) was an influential Odia poet. Recipient of several awards, including Katha Award, Kanji Patel has four collections of poems, the latest one being Earth Song: Selected Poems. Translator and poet, Gopika Jadeja lives in Singapore. Saumyajit Acharya has published twenty-four books of poems. His poems have been translated into Indian and foreign languages. Prabal Kumar Basu is a previous contributor to Chandrabhāgā. S B Easwaran, a former journalist, now lives in Sakyong, a village in the eastern Himalayas. His work has appeared in journals like Majuscule and the International Literary Quarterly. A J Thomas has published twenty books, among which mention may be made of The Greatest Malayalam Stories Ever Told and 100 Indian Stories: A Feast of Remarkable Short Fiction from the 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries. His awards include the Vodafone Crossword Award and AKMG Prize. He was editor of Indian Literature. Anilkumar D has published two poetry collections. He has received the Kerala Sahithya Akademi Young Poet Award. Anitha Thampi has published five collections of poetry, including Alappuzha Vellam (Alappuzha Water), and two collections of essays. She received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for her poetry. Anvar Ali received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for his third collection of poems, Mehboob Express. S Kalesh published his latest collection of poems, Attakkaari, from DC Books. Karthik K published his debut poetry collection, Kling, from DC Books. Nile is a well-known Malayalam poet. N G Unnikrishnan is a source of inspiration for young Malayalam poets. He is the latest recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award. Aash Ashitha is a noted young Malayalam fiction writer. She is the author of several story collections and the novel, Mushrooms and Cats. She has also translated Kannada gay writer Vasudhendra’s Mohanaswamy into Malayalam. Aparna Thomas is a translator of poetry from Malayalam into English. Her translations have been anthologized in 127 Poetry Voices. Sanjeev Sethi has authored eight books of poems. His poems have been published in hundreds of journals in several countries. Bishnu Sankar Verma has contributed earlier to Chandrabhāgā. Kamalakar Bhat has published a selection of Jayanta Mahapatra’s poems in Kannada. His recent work is Courtesy of Criticism: Selected Essays of Kirtinath Kurtkoti, Penguin. H S Shivaprakash is a renowned Kannada poet, playwright, translator, and critic. His acclaimed translation I Keep Vigil of Rudra appeared in Penguin Classics. He has received the Sahitya Akademi and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards. Tirumalesh K V (1940 – 2023) was a multifaceted Kannada writer. Bilingual writer and translator Mruthyunjaya K P is a distinguished Kannada poet, storyteller, and academic. He has eight collections of poems and has received the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award. Hanumanthayya N K died young. He was a poet, playwright, editor and biographer. He was a recipient of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award. Bhuvana Hiremath is a contemporary Kannada poet, short story writer, and essayist. Her debut poetry collection, Trial Roomina Apsareyaru, has won several awards. Shashi Tarikere is a poet, short story writer and filmmaker. His first short story collection, Duming, and his first poetry collection, Pyupa, have won multiple awards. Rachita Swain is a regular contributor to Chandrabhāgā.

Jayanta Mahapatra wrote Bhor Motira Kanaphula, his autobiography, in Odia, which Madhumita Chanda is translating for Sahitya Akademi. Sudeep Sen’s latest anthology is Converse: Contemporary English Poetry by Indians. He delivered Derek Walcott Lecture at the Noble Laureate Festival. Ashutosh Parida received Sahitya Akademi Award for his book Aprastuta Mrutyu. Chittaranjan Mishra has translated works of Harold Pinter, Albert Camus and Ashutosh Parida. Vinita Agrawal has four collections of poems, including The Silk of Hunger. She was awarded Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize. Kavita Ezekiel Mendonca’s biography of her father is titled Nissim Ezekiel: Poet & Father. Ankit Raj Ojha has published his poems in journals like Poetry Wales and The Honest Ulsterman and is a consulting editor with Routledge journals. P. P. Raveendran has contributed to Chandrabhāgā since 2018. His latest book is Under the Bhasha Gaze: Modernity and Indian Literature (Oxford University Press, 2023). Sukirtharani, author of nine collections of poems, features in The Verso Book of Feminism: Revolutionary Words From Four Millennia of Rebellion. N. Srivatsa’s collection of translated Tamil poetry is Modern Tamil Poetry: A Miniature Canvas – Volume I. Anitha N Jayaram is a copy editor and translator. She has translated two books from English to Tamil. Vibha Rani is a well-known writer, poet, playwright and theatre actor. Director of Sindhi feature film Aakhreen Train, Susheel Gajwani is the author of an English play, A Thousand Temple Bells. Udaya Narayan Singh’s Sahitya Akademi Award-winning book is Jahalak Dairy. Nilim Kumar is recipient of Viswambhara Dr. C. Narayan Reddy National Literary Award, 2025. Author of a number of translated books, Bibekananda Choudhury has his translations in anthologies like the Penguin Book of Poems on Indian Cities. M. R. Renukumar is a recipient of Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award. Shyma Pacha teaches English in a college in Kannur. Gopinath Mohanty is a Jnanapith Award-winning novelist whose novels like Paraja and Amrutara Santana are modern classics. Jayashree Samantaray’s translation of a collection of Odia short stories on tribal life into English will be published soon. Naseem Shafaie is recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award. A. N. Dhar and Indu Kilam are distinguished professors and translators from Kasmiri launguage. Neerja Mattoo is the author of The Mystic and the Lyric: Four Women Poets from Kashmir. Recipient of State Sahitya Akademi Award, Prabal Kumar Basu has authored twenty-two books of poems. Owshnik Ghosh, an earlier contributor to Chandrabhāgā, is pursuing his PhD. in University of Oklahoma. Barnali Roy, editor and translator, is publisher of Yapanchitra books. Arpita Kundu’s latest collection of poems is Purechhe Naam Mayur Aahorone. She has received Kritibas Puraskar. Abhijit Bera has five collections of poems and is the recipient of Yapanchitra Poetry Award. Trina Chakraborti has seven collections of poems. She is presently working in a publishing company in Delhi. Bharadwaj Mishra is the author of poetry collections including Bathing Ghat at Kotipalli. Rachita Swain’s reviews have appeared in World Literature Today, KITAAB and Chandrabhāgā.
