Women with Disabilities – Changing the World for the Better

On 16th November 2024, Swabhiman, in collaboration with the Ketaki Foundation Trust, hosted the panel discussion “Women with Disabilities: Changing the World for the Better – From Literature, Laws, and Policies to Real-Life Changes” at the Kalabhoomi Crafts Museum, Bhubaneswar. This event brought together experts, advocates, and individuals to discuss the challenges and progress faced by women with disabilities in India and across the world.

The session was kicked off by a warm Welcome Address by Dr. Sruti Mahapatra, Founder and CEO of Swabhiman, who set the tone for an insightful and engaging discussion. This was followed by a Fireside Chat expertly moderated by Sneha Mishra. The panelists included Dr. Komal Kamra, Diethono Nakhro, Kanchan Pamnani, Krishna Mohan Tata, and Sumitra Parhi. Additionally, virtual presentations were delivered by Sarah Muthoni Kamau, Kerryann Ifill, and Rhoda Garland.

Throughout the session, panelists shared their personal experiences and professional insights on how disability and gender intersect and the challenges faced by women with disabilities in accessing opportunities, legal protections, and societal inclusion. They also discussed the progress made through legal reforms and inclusive policies and highlighted the continued need for awareness and action. The interactive Q&A session provided an opportunity for attendees to engage with the experts and learn from their expertise.

While acknowledging the strides made toward empowerment, the panelists emphasized that much work remains to ensure equal rights, accessibility, and opportunities for women with disabilities. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Rachita Swain of the Ketaki Foundation Trust, who shared her reflections on the discussions and called for ongoing advocacy and solidarity to make the world a more inclusive place for all.
